Your First Contact Lens Fitting: What to Expect
From the exam to your first try-on at home. A step-by-step walkthrough so you know exactly what's coming.
It's easier than you're imagining
Most first-time patients are nervous about one thing: touching their eye. We get it. Here's the honest walkthrough so nothing surprises you. The whole process is comfortable, and the vast majority of people are putting lenses in and out on their own by the end of the visit.
Step 1: The exam and measurements
A contact lens fitting includes a comprehensive eye exam plus extra measurements a glasses prescription doesn't cover: the curvature of your cornea, your tear film quality, and your pupil and eyelid anatomy. These determine which lenses will actually fit your eyes, not just correct your vision.
Step 2: Trying lenses on
We'll place a trial pair on your eyes, let them settle for a few minutes, then check the fit and your vision. You'll tell us honestly how they feel, first lenses often feel "aware" for the first few days, but they should never hurt.
Step 3: Insertion and removal training
This is the part everyone dreads and everyone gets through. Our team coaches you one-on-one until you can put the lenses in and take them out by yourself with real techniques for the blink reflex, shaky hands, and long nails. There's no time pressure; we go at your pace. There is a one time fee for training.
Step 4: Trial week and follow-up
- Wear the trial lenses at home, starting with a few hours and building up.
- Follow the wearing and cleaning schedule exactly and absolutley no sleeping in lenses unless prescribed.
- Come back for an included optional follow-up if you'd like any changes. We can confirm the fit is healthy and the vision is sharp before finalizing your prescription.
- Never order lenses with an expired prescription. Fit and eye health change over time. We have seen some bad eye infections that scar the cornea permanently reducing quality of vision.
