Myopia in Kids: Why Cases Are Rising and What Parents Can Do

Nearsightedness in children isn't just an annoyance, it's a long-term eye health issue. Modern myopia management can slow it down.

Myopia is rising fast

Nearsightedness has roughly doubled in kids over the past few decades, and researchers point to a clear pattern: more near work and screen time, less time outdoors. Kids are also becoming nearsighted younger and the earlier it starts, the higher it tends to climb.

Why stronger prescriptions every year matter

Myopia isn't just about needing thicker lenses. Higher myopia meaningfully raises the lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. Slowing how fast a child's prescription progresses isn't cosmetic, it's protecting their eye health for decades.

What myopia management actually is

  • Specialized contact lenses- Designs proven to slow eye growth while providing clear vision.
  • Low-dose atropine drops- A simple nightly drop shown in studies to slow progression.
  • Lifestyle changes- More outdoor time (about 2 hours a day is associated with lower risk) and regular breaks from near work.
  • Regular monitoring- Tracking prescription and eye growth every 6–12 months to confirm the plan is working.

When to start

The earlier the better, ideally as soon as a child is diagnosed, especially if either parent is nearsighted or the prescription is changing at every visit. Contact lenses can help slow down the growth of the eye according to research. Progression typically continues until the late teens, so there's real value at every stage.

What to do next

If your child's prescription keeps getting stronger, bring it up at their next exam. We'll measure where things stand, talk through the options honestly, and build a plan that fits your child including the simple stuff, like getting them outside more.
