More than reading a chart

Most people think of an eye exam as the letter chart, and that part matters: we measure your refractive error precisely so that any prescription we write is genuinely the clearest, most comfortable option for your eyes. But clarity is only one piece of vision. We also test how your two eyes team together, how well they focus at near, your depth perception, your color vision, and your peripheral awareness. A person can read the bottom line of the chart and still struggle with headaches, eye strain, or losing their place while reading, because the issue is coordination rather than sharpness.

Because your eyes are the only place in the body where blood vessels and nerve tissue can be viewed directly, a thorough exam also doubles as a general health screening. We routinely find early signs of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and autoimmune inflammation in patients who had no idea anything was wrong.

What happens during your visit

You'll start with a short conversation. We want to know what you notice day to day, blur at distance, trouble with night driving, watery or burning eyes, fluctuating vision on the computer, headaches by mid-afternoon. Your history, your medications, your work, and your family's eye history all shape what we look for.

From there we move through testing: entrance measurements, refraction, eye pressure, and a careful examination of the front surface of the eye under the microscope, followed by an evaluation of the retina and optic nerve. Digital retinal imaging gives us a high-resolution record of the back of your eye, which means next year's visit isn't guesswork, we can compare images side by side and see whether anything has changed.

Children ages 7 and up

We see children starting at 7 years old in our office. School vision screenings check distance sight and little else, so plenty of kids pass a screening while still struggling with the focusing and tracking work that reading demands. If your child avoids homework, loses their place on the page, complains of headaches, or holds a book unusually close, a full exam is worth scheduling even after a clean screening.

How often should you come in?

For most healthy adults, a yearly exam is the simplest and safest rhythm, it lines up with how most vision plans renew, and it keeps a reliable year-over-year record of your eye health. If you have diabetes, glaucoma or a family history of it, high blood pressure, or you wear contact lenses, an annual exam isn't just convenient, it's part of managing your health. Children in a growing prescription often benefit from being seen yearly as well, since a change of even a small amount can affect their schoolwork.
