Dry eye treatment in Oxnard, CA

Dry eye is one of the most common reasons patients come to see us, and one of the most commonly dismissed. Burning, grittiness, redness, watering, vision that clears when you blink hard, those aren't things you have to live with.

  • Tear film evaluation
  • Prescription drops & punctal plugs
  • Ongoing follow-up

Dry eye is a disease, not a nuisance

Your tear film has three layers: an oily outer layer that keeps tears from evaporating, a watery middle layer, and a mucus layer that helps everything stick to the surface of the eye. When any layer falls short, the surface becomes unstable, and an unstable surface is why vision fluctuates through the day even though your prescription hasn't changed.

There are two broad patterns. Some eyes simply don't make enough tears. Far more often, the oil glands along the lid margin are blocked or thickened, so tears evaporate too fast. That's why 'my eyes water constantly' and 'my eyes are dry' are frequently the same diagnosis: the eye reflex-tears in response to a surface that keeps drying out.

Symptoms worth an appointment

  • Burning, stinging, or a sandy, gritty feeling
  • Watery eyes, especially outdoors or in wind
  • Vision that blurs and then clears when you blink
  • Redness that comes and goes through the day
  • Contact lenses that used to be comfortable and no longer are
  • Eyes that feel worse at the end of a screen-heavy day
  • Crusting, flaking, or swollen lid margins

How we evaluate it

We start by looking at the tear film itself, how stable it is, how quickly it breaks up, how much tear volume sits along the lid margin. We examine the lids and lashes under magnification, and we use dyes that make surface damage on the cornea visible so we can see exactly where and how much the surface is suffering.

Just as important is the conversation about what you're doing all day. Screen time, ceiling fans, contact lens wear, antihistamines, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, hormonal changes, LASIK history, autoimmune conditions like Sjögren's, and simply living in a dry, windy county all contribute. Treatment that ignores the cause tends to stop working the moment you stop the drops.

Treatment is layered, and it's personal

Almost nobody gets better with a single bottle of artificial tears. We build a plan in layers and adjust it at follow-up visits based on what actually changed.

  • Preservative-free artificial tears matched to your tear film, not whatever's on sale
  • Warm compresses and lid hygiene to open blocked oil glands
  • Prescription anti-inflammatory drops when the surface is inflamed
  • Punctal plugs to keep the tears you do make on the eye longer
  • Omega-3 nutrition and hydration changes
  • Environmental and screen-habit adjustments, including deliberate blink breaks

Follow-up is the part that works

Dry eye is chronic, which means the goal is control rather than a one-time cure. We'll see you back to confirm the surface is healing, adjust anything that isn't helping, and simplify the routine down to the smallest set of habits that keeps you comfortable. Most patients who stick with a plan notice a real difference within a few weeks.

Keep in mind that dry eye disease is a medical visit, not a vision-plan visit. Our office accepts Medicare PPO for medical visits; otherwise these visits are out of pocket. We'll tell you what to expect before we begin.
